Let’s Talk About Real Suggestions: Sidehole Plugin for Checking Teeth Alignment

Misaligned teeth can quietly destroy productivity, quality, and morale in a CNC environment. My proposal is a simple but powerful alignment plugin for side holes — creating a clear, repeatable reference surface that eliminates guesswork, prevents rework, and aligns everyday machining with aerospace-level standards.

Imagine this: one day, a new manager steps in, gathers the team, and asks machinists to share ideas on how to improve the performance of the machine shop.

On the notice board, people post a variety of suggestions. But today, I want to share one of mine — a proposal that reflects both technical precision and strategic management thinking.

🔹 Let’s Talk About Real Suggestions

7. Sidehole Plugin for Checking Teeth Alignment

Let us put an end to incorrect teeth alignment once and for all. I propose the creation of specialised inserts designed to fit into side holes with precise diameters that perfectly match the existing geometry of the component.

If a hole happens to be smaller than expected, a corresponding insert can be custom-made to fit it. The opposite end of the insert would have a flat reference surface — similar in size to a £1 coin — positioned at a perfect 90-degree angle to the component’s plane.

In simpler terms, this solution provides an instant reference point for alignment verification. The flat face of the insert would enable precise visual and mechanical checks of component orientation, helping machinists and inspectors verify correct positioning without additional tooling or time loss.

✅ What This Change Delivers

  • Eliminate repeated component redrawing due to alignment errors.
  • Reduce setup and verification time by giving machinists a clear, repeatable reference system.
  • Achieve a 100% reduction in misaligned teeth, drastically lowering scrap and rework rates.
  • Increase product reliability and quality — ensuring every part meets aerospace and defence standards.

This is not just a technical improvement — it is a strategic enhancement that strengthens our production culture.

It reflects a mindset where innovation meets precision, and where every improvement, no matter how small, creates a measurable impact on performance, cost, and morale.

Because true leadership is not only about managing people — it is about engineering better systems that empower people to perform at their best.

With this idea, we move one step closer to making our machine shop a place where precision is not just a goal — it is a habit, a mindset, and a competitive advantage.
