Independent Part Inspection – A Practical Suggestion for Machine Shops

Listen to this post

Imagine this: one day, a new manager steps in, gathers the team, and asks machinists to share ideas on how to improve the performance of the machine shop. On the notice board, people post a variety of suggestions. But today, I want to share one of mine.

Independent Part Inspection – A Practical Suggestion

1. Independent part inspection.

Let us create an independent part inspection form that includes the following data:

  • date;
  • time;
  • part number;
  • inspector’s name;
  • part condition (good / no good);
  • signature.

💡 The idea is as follows: any machinist or person capable of taking measurements, during their free time or while the machine they operate is idle, can approach and perform control measurements of the part. This will allow for the effective identification of defects or faults at the initial stage of production.

What I Wanted to Demonstrate with This Proposal

  • A systematic approach to quality improvement.
  • The mindset of a supervisor, not just an operator.
  • Initiative to involve the whole team in responsibility for quality.

The Results This Could Bring

  • Early detection and minimisation of scrap.
  • Saving time and resources for the company.
  • Stronger engagement and professional growth within the team.
  • Building a culture where quality is everyone’s responsibility.

📌 Suggestions like this do not just optimise processes — they create a culture of continuous improvement and lift the entire department to a higher standard.
