Imagine one of your team members reports that some colleagues are regularly leaving for their break five minutes early — and also leaving the shop floor before the end of the shift to clock out.

What Would You Do in This Situation?

At first glance, it may seem like a small issue. But these “small things” directly affect productivity, discipline, and fairness within the team. If ignored, it creates frustration among those who follow the rules. If handled too harshly, it risks damaging trust and morale.

How I Would Approach It as a Supervisor

  1. Gather facts. Review time clock data and compare it with shift schedules.
  2. Open conversation. Not public blame, but a team reminder about discipline and equal rules for everyone.
  3. Personal approach. Speak privately with those who are breaking the rules, explain the consequences — not only for the company, but for their teammates.
  4. Fairness. Make sure rules are clear and consistently applied to all. Nobody should feel “special” or “cheated.”
  5. Motivation. Highlight that mutual respect starts with simple things — from greeting each other to respecting working time.

Key idea: A true leader balances discipline with trust. The goal is to keep order while keeping the team motivated and respectful toward each other.
