Imagine this: you are supervising a machine shop. Some employees stop greeting each other in the morning. Even worse, a few of them avoid greeting colleagues from abroad. The atmosphere becomes colder, and small divisions start to grow.

What Would You Do in This Situation?

At first glance, it might seem like a small issue — just a missed “hello.” But in reality, it reflects respect, team spirit, and inclusion. Without these, no team can work at its full potential.

What I Would Do as a Supervisor

  • Lead by example — Every day I would personally greet everyone, regardless of position or background, showing that respect is a standard, not an option.
  • Raise awareness — In team meetings, I would remind everyone that small acts of kindness like greetings set the tone for teamwork, motivation, and safety.
  • Encourage inclusivity — I would make sure international colleagues feel equally valued by involving them in conversations, asking for their input, and celebrating diversity in the shop.
  • One-to-one conversations — If I notice someone deliberately avoiding greetings or showing negative behaviour, I would address it privately, with respect, but firmly.
  • Create a positive culture — A simple “good morning” is not just words. It is a signal: “I see you, I respect you, and I am part of the same team as you.”

The outcome:

  • Improved atmosphere in the workshop;
  • Stronger trust between colleagues;
  • A culture where everyone feels respected, regardless of nationality or background;
  • Higher motivation and willingness to cooperate.

👉 And what would you do if your team started to lose such a basic, but powerful sign of respect as greeting each other?
