When we speak about leadership in manufacturing, many people first think of a job title: Supervisor, Manager, Team Lead. But in reality, a true leader is not defined by their position, but by their results and their impact on the team.
For me, leadership is not only about managing people — it is about setting direction, providing the right tools, and creating an environment where the team is motivated to grow and achieve more.
Measuring Efficiency and Practising “Transparent Leadership”
One of the key tools I rely on is the daily measurement of efficiency. This is not just data on a spreadsheet — it is a mirror of how the team is actually performing.
In my current role, for example:
- I supervise the work on five CNC machines.
- Each machine is monitored with daily efficiency statistics.
- The results are clear: 123–180% efficiency, compared with other departments where figures vary between 0 and 53%.
📊 These figures immediately highlight:
- who is contributing consistently,
- where the bottlenecks appear,
- and who naturally takes on the role of a leader — not because of their job title, but because of their influence on performance.
Why Does This Matter?
A true leader does not hide behind the numbers — they use them to:
- motivate their team,
- identify and remove the causes of low efficiency,
- create a culture of zero scrap and zero safety incidents,
- and prove that outstanding results are possible when processes and teamwork are properly aligned.
Conclusion
Leadership within a team means inspiring people whilst keeping a firm grip on processes. Numbers are a valuable tool, but behind every figure stand the people who make it possible. It is this combination of clear analytics and strong people skills that transforms a manager into a true leader.
